Dutch health technology company Philips said on 26 August 2026 that it has received nearly $34 million from the US government for research into AI-driven robotics for stroke treatment. The company is looking at whether doctors can control operating rooms remotely.
In this setup, the doctor would sit in a kind of cockpit with joysticks and multiple screens, according to a spokesperson. This could allow specialized procedures to be carried out while the physician is not physically present in the operating room.
The research focuses on stroke treatment, an area where speed is essential. Philips wants to use the funding to determine whether this form of robotics and artificial intelligence can be applied in practice.
